Inner Kartli

Kartli, the central region of Georgia, which has always been the heart of Georgia, is the country’s orchard and spangled with historical monuments. Kartli is the largest and the most important region in Georgia and even gave the Georgian name for the country “Sakartvelo” .

Inner kartli, as historical province, is located between Likhi Range and river Aragvi. The total area of the region (south Osetian – 2230 sq.km and population-80 000) is 5770 sq. km, and population – 464 000.

The climate is moderately warm and humid (some of places are dry). The landscape of Inner kartli is signified with variety.

The region of Inner kartli has the numerous possibilities for development of tourism. The favourable geographical condition, the good recreational places, nature, cold clear springs of mountain, big and small rivers, natural and not natural lakes, the beautiful places of Trialeti and Likhi Ranges, the historical and nature monuments were always attracted attention of tourists.

The region of Inner kartli is rich with cultural and architectural monuments. On the mountains and gorges are built numerous stone castle-fortress, castles, churches, old former villages.

The region of Inner kartli is one of the rich region with historical monuments. This big potential will be interesting for lover of cultural and pilgrim tourism.

Here existed church-monasteries will be attention object for pilgrims with Christian traditions.

Castle-fortress of Surami, castle of Kvishkheti, church of Tsromi, church of Urbnisi Sioni, church of Metekhi Gvtismshobeli, Kvatakhevi, Samtavisi, Ertatsminda, Gorijvari, monastery of Kintsvisi, Tsinarekhi, monastery of Bieti, church of Tsveri Saint Giorgi, Rkoni, castle of Dzami and etc.

There are many archaeological monuments also in region. Only in Kareli region there are so important archaeological monuments for Georgian history as: valley of Queen and Natsargora, Tsikhiagora in Kaspi region and etc.

As for wino tourism, it is not so developed in the region as in Khakheti, but the potencial from here is not less than in Kakheti. Even the fact, that the oldest signs of wine culture and wine stones (the oldest in the world – 8000 B.C.) is discovered in the territory of Kartli.
